The Hamburg solar and wind park operator Blue Elephant Energy AG (BEE) and EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG (EnBW) have concluded long-term power purchase agreements (PPA) for a 150-megawatt solar park project in Andalusia, Spain. The parties have agreed not to disclose the economic conditions of the electricity price, which is fixed for 10 years.
The BEE project consists of three solar parks with a capacity of 50 megawatts each, including a substation, and is already under construction. The grid connection of the systems is planned for the second quarter of 2022. Once completed, the plants will generate around 315-gigawatt hours of environmentally friendly electricity a year. Sufficient solar energy to cover the annual electricity needs of around 95,000 households and reduce annual CO 2 emissions by around 96,000 tons.
PPAs enable unsupported systems to be implemented and have thus become a central instrument of the energy transition.
“As the trading division of EnBW, we connect the developers and operators of renewable energy systems with the market with tailor-made offers. We are delighted to be able to bring our expertise to the Spanish market, ”explains Peter Heydecker, who is responsible for the trading business area at EnBW. EnBW acts as an intermediary between operator and electricity consumer and adapts renewable energies, which can only be planned to a limited extent, to the needs of electricity consumers. Because the market integration of renewable energies is elementary for the success of the energy transition. “With our many years of experience on both the production and trading side, we see good marketing opportunities in the Spanish wholesale market as well as for customer-specific solutions,” Heydecker continues.
BEE appreciates the advantages of a partner with a broad energy base: “In the rapidly growing market for green electricity, electricity purchase agreements secure predictable sales revenues and thus enable us to implement projects that are not subsidized by the state. We are therefore delighted to be working with EnBW on our first subsidy-free solar project in Spain and at the same time making a contribution to a sustainable and clean energy supply on the Iberian Peninsula, “comments Tim Kallas, Chief Investment Officer of Blue Elephant Energy AG.
