Norwegian environmental and technical consultancy group Åkerblå Group invests in UK based marine and environmental survey specialist Ocean Ecology Ltd. The companies aim to capitalise on their combined competence to build up a joint service offering for the Norwegian offshore wind industry.

“Ocean Ecology are one of the UK’s leading players in marine ecological monitoring for offshore wind farm developers. In combination with Åkerblå Group’s local presence, we aim to build up a joint service offering to cater for the emerging Norwegian offshore wind industry,” says Roger Sørensen, CEO of Åkerblå Group.

Åkerblå Group acquires 51 percent of the shares in Gloucester-based Ocean Ecology. The founders and current owners of Ocean Ecology will retain the remaining 49 percent and continue to develop the company together with Åkerblå Group.

The parties have agreed to not disclose the financial details of the transaction.

Established offshore wind player

“Ocean Ecology and Åkerblå are companies with a history of healthy growth and financial performance. We will together become an even more robust and reliable partner for offshore wind developers in UK, Norway and further afield,” adds Roger Sørensen.

Ocean Ecology was established in 2013 and is recognised as a UK leader in issues relating to impacts of human activities on marine ecological communities and are considered industry leaders in providing marine ecological survey, analysis and advisory services to the world’s leading offshore windfarm developers including Ørsted, RWE, SSE and Vattenfall as well as pioneers in floating offshore wind such as Blue Gem Wind.

Ocean Ecology consists of a 20-strong team, primarily marine biologists. It specialises in providing a range of marine survey, laboratory and consultancy services for projects in both the coastal and offshore zones to feed into the environmental impact assessment process, monitoring programmes and applied research. The company has fully equipped laboratory facilities and headquarters located on the banks of the Severn Estuary in Gloucestershire and has recently opened a Scottish office in Oban.

Targeting Norwegian offshore wind

Environmental surveys of the marine environment, from surface to seabed, along with analyses of ocean currents and wind, are part of both Åkerblå Group and Ocean Ecology’s specialist competence. While Åkerblå is most renowned for environmental surveys within the aquaculture industry, Ocean Ecology holds a similar foothold in the UK offshore wind sector.

“The environmental survey competence we jointly provide represents what European authorities are seeking to bolster supply chains and make the aquaculture and offshore renewables industries even more sustainable,” says Ross Griffin, Technical Director of Ocean Ecology.

Going forward, Ocean Ecology will continue to build on this well-established UK offering whilst aiming to utilise Åkerblå’s position in Norway to expand its service offering to the Norwegian continental shelf.

“We are delighted to partner with Åkerblå Group. Ocean Ecology possesses specialist competence and experience from the mature but rapidly growing UK offshore wind sector. Teaming up with Åkerblå will enable us to fast-track this offering to the Norwegian offshore wind industry which is an exciting prospect for the team,” says Ross Griffin.

Following completion of the transaction, Åkerblå Group’s CEO, Roger Sørensen, and CFO Frode Westbye will join the Ocean Ecology board of directors.
