The Trianel wind farm Borkum in the North Sea is the first German offshore wind farm to be certified according to ISO 55001. The asset management system of the municipal wind farm operator thus corresponds to international standards.
The Trianel Windpark Borkum II (TWB II) has received the corresponding accredited certificate from TÜV SÜD Management Service GmbH. The sister park Trianel Windpark Borkum I (TWB I) has been certified according to ISO 55001 since December 2020 and successfully completed the annual monitoring audit at the end of 2021.
Asset management systems link purely operational activities with overarching corporate goals. With a structured approach, the development, coordination and control of all activities of an asset are aligned with organisational goals. DIN ISO 55001 defines a catalog with 70 requirements and numerous sub-items for effective management of physical assets.
With the certification, the wind farm operators demonstrate that both parks are managed in accordance with the financial interests of the predominantly municipal shareholders. The asset management guidelines developed for this purpose focus on maximising wind yield through consistent performance management and optimising maintenance costs through efficient management.
The certification was preceded by an extensive process in which proof of the standard-compliant implementation of the requirements for an asset management system specified in the standard chapters had to be provided. “The operators of the Trianel Windpark Borkum meet the requirements of 55001 in all areas. The risk management requirement exceeds the necessary requirements and shows that the company is well-positioned to meet stakeholder expectations,” said Robert Eichner, Lead Auditor ISO 55001, TÜV SÜD. A large number of interviews were also conducted within the organisation.
“We are pleased to be able to meet our own quality standards with certification according to DIN ISO 55001 and to be able to demonstrate maximum added value to our municipal shareholders,” said Dr. Marcus Delin, manager of the two operating companies. “Performance and maintenance management of an offshore wind farm are complex tasks that we implement in a uniform, structured framework. This ensures at all times that our asset management system maps the corporate goals and shareholder expectations to the operational goals and measures.”
For the Trianel Windpark Borkum I, which has been in operation since 2015, the high standards of DIN ISO 55001 have been checked in the annual surveillance audit.
“This year’s audit has once again confirmed to us that our operation is extremely professional and economical,” emphasises Bernd Deharde, Managing Director of Trianel Windkraftwerk Borkum GmbH & Co. KG. “For example, we are able to identify and make potential improvements based solely on our exceptionally good data situation”.
The DIN ISO 55001 standard is used primarily in capital-intensive industries in which assets are of crucial importance for sustainable performance and profitability. The certification is a confirmation for partners, shareholders and future investors that the best international methods in asset management are applied.
