Works begin for new Livigno – Premadio underground cable connection

Works have begun to create the new “Livigno – Premadio” underground cable connection planned by Terna in the province of Sondrio.

The Company will invest € 65 million in the work, one of the main projects planned by Terna to increase the reliability of the electricity service at the host locations of the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Milan and Cortina. The works will enable greater meshing of the electricity grid in the area while increasing the resilience of the transmission system in areas that have been affected by extreme weather events in recent years.

The project foresees the construction of a power line, formed of two underground cables, between the primary cabin in Livigno, owned by the local distributor and the Terna substation located in Premadio, in the municipality of Valdidentro. The lines, running for approximately 20 km, almost entirely follow the same route.

In this initial phase, involving execution of civil works enabling subsequent cable laying, two worksites will be active in two different areas of the municipality of Livigno. The first in the stretch from km 23+400 on the state road SS301 to the crossing of the Vallaccia River, and the second on the municipal road system, from the car park at km 29+300 on state road SS301 to passo d’Eira. In the coming weeks, works will continue in the municipality of Valdidentro.

All the work will be carried out by Terna in coordination with local administrations and the entities involved in order to minimise the impact of the works on the road system. Works will be active during daytime hours from Monday to Friday, with areas affected by excavations restored on Saturday morning. In July and August, which usually see considerable tourist traffic, the works will mainly focus on secondary roads or green areas without affecting the main road network.
